Effects
- Setup your effects at the beginning of the mix.
- Use hall, chamber, plate, room + non-linear reverbs, and what they sound best on.
- Use chorus, flange, phasers and hamonizers to add width, size and color to your tracks.
- Use delays to create depth, create a mood + enhance the rhythm of a part.
Tracks
- Get big sounding, record-quality mixes.
- Create a cohesive sounding mix.
- Bring out the most important element of each track so it will work well with the other instruments.
- Create signature sounds that give the artist an aural identity.
- Get huge and powerful drum sounds.
- Get a warm fat bass sound that can be heard in small speakers.
- Get a big guitar sound without overpowering the drums or vocals.

I frequent The Womb forums and have enjoyed Charles’ input there in the past.
I finally broke down and bought Mix It Like a Record second hand last week.
The discs arrived today and I’m concerned that what I bought are
counterfeit.
The dvds appear to be dvd-r and not replicated. The artwork looks to have been printed on a laser printer (discs and cover). Also, there was no insert/booklet included.
Is this how they are shipped? How can I tell if I was ripped off?

What happened to eL (the band in the dvd)?
I don’t know what they’re up to these days. Their official web site is down, but their CD is still available here on CD Baby: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/elband
I believe you are correct that they are counterfeit. The official product does not come shipped like that. One of the few places to get an official copy is from the links here on this site.

Listening to Mix It Like A Record dvd, I see that Charles uses DUY Valve on almost every track. For someone that does not have the money to invest that much on a plugin as a beginner home studio, do you know if there is an alternative to that plugin?
I’ve never heard anything that sounds the same for free Mario. You might check out the KVR forums to see if there’s a recommendation to be had.
